CAST vs DEEP Series: Matching Fishing Line Diameter to the Application

A range-planning guide for deciding when lighter CAST diameters or larger DEEP diameters are more appropriate for a fishing-line programme.

A fishing-line catalogue becomes easier to buy when the series names correspond to real specification differences. The CAST and DEEP groups can be used as a simple example: one group covers smaller diameters such as C20–C35, while the other extends into larger diameters such as D40–D50.

Think in application ranges, not isolated SKUs

Rather than recommending one diameter for every situation, define a working range. Smaller diameters can suit applications where spool capacity and a reduced cross-section matter. Larger diameters can suit situations where the buyer wants more physical material and a different balance of handling and wear margin.

Length should follow the use case

Package length is part of the product design. A 100 m package may suit one retail format, while 200 m or 300 m can be more practical for repeated rigging or larger reels. When building an OEM range, package length should be decided alongside diameter instead of being treated as an afterthought.

Do not publish strength claims without a test standard

Breaking strength is only meaningful when the test method is defined. Knot type, pull speed, sample conditioning and whether the measurement is taken on straight line or at a knot can all affect the result. For a professional catalogue, pair any strength figure with a consistent internal or external test procedure.

The goal of a CAST/DEEP structure is clarity: customers should immediately understand why the larger D-series products exist and how they differ from the smaller C-series products.
