Badminton String Tension Guide: Control, Repulsion, Comfort and Durability

A practical tension guide explaining why higher is not always better and how to test badminton strings safely and consistently.

Tension changes the entire string bed, so it can easily overpower the differences between two string models. That is why a useful product comparison begins with a stable reference tension rather than immediately chasing the highest number a racket can accept.

What higher tension changes

Higher tension creates a firmer string bed with less deformation at impact. Players with consistent timing may appreciate the precise feedback, but the sweet spot can feel less forgiving. The racket and string are also subjected to greater installation stress, so the manufacturer’s recommended tension range should always be respected.

What lower tension changes

Lower tension allows more string-bed deformation and usually creates a softer overall response. This can be useful for developing players, defensive play and long training sessions where comfort and a larger effective sweet spot are valuable.

Gauge and tension should be tested together—but not changed together

If you change from a 0.70 mm string to a 0.61 mm string and also increase tension several pounds, you will not know which change produced the new feel. Keep the tension constant first. After you understand the gauge difference, make a small tension adjustment if necessary.

A simple test worksheet

  • Racket model and string pattern
  • String model and gauge
  • Reference tension
  • Hours of play before noticeable feel changes
  • Control on clears and drives
  • Comfort on off-centre contact
  • Visible notching or coating wear

This approach is useful for individual players and for OEM development teams. A repeatable test creates information that can be compared across samples instead of relying only on first impressions.
