Z61, Z63 and Z66: Choosing a Badminton String Gauge

Compare 0.61, 0.63 and 0.66 mm badminton-string gauges using response, wear, tension and player consistency as practical criteria.

Badminton strings work at relatively high tension and are repeatedly loaded by fast shuttle impacts, so a difference of only a few hundredths of a millimetre can be meaningful. Z61, Z63 and Z66 illustrate a useful progression from a very thin gauge toward a more balanced diameter.

Z61: when thin-gauge response is the priority

At 0.61 mm, Z61 sits at the thin end of the range. A thin gauge can provide a very clear contact sensation, but players should expect less material at the wear points where mains and crosses rub together. It is therefore best evaluated by players who restring regularly and understand their preferred tension.

Z63: a small step toward additional wear margin

Moving to 0.63 mm adds material without making a dramatic jump in diameter. This can be a useful comparison point for players who like thin strings but want to see whether a slightly larger gauge changes durability or stability over repeated sessions.

Z66: a balanced reference

At 0.66 mm, the string sits closer to a common all-round badminton gauge. For clubs, stores and developing players, this type of diameter can be easier to evaluate because it balances response and wear more conservatively than ultra-thin options.

Do not choose gauge without considering tension

A thin string at high tension can feel very demanding, while the same string at a more moderate tension may feel easier to use. Stay inside the racket manufacturer’s recommended range and change tension gradually. When testing Z61, Z63 and Z66, keep the racket and tension constant first so you can identify the effect of gauge more clearly.
